Ashtanga Yoga, a system of yoga developed by Patanjali, the ancient sage, is a complete and comprehensive form of yoga. "Ashtanga" means "eight legs" and refers to the eight stages or steps of the yoga journey. Ashtanga Yoga has eight limbs.

1. Yama: These are the moral standards that guide us in how we treat others. The five Yamas include Ahimsa, Satya, Asteya, Brahmacharya, and Aparigraha.

2. Niyamas: These are the practices or observances that we do to cultivate personal growth and self-discipline. The five Niyamas include Saucha (cleanliness), Santosha (contentment), Tapas (austerity), Svadhyaya, and Ishvara Pranidhana.

3. Asanas: These are physical postures used to improve the body's flexibility, strength, and balance. Asanas prepare the body to meditate and reach deeper states of consciousness.

4. Pranayama: is a breathing exercise that helps control breath and energy. Pranayama techniques calm the mind and reduce stress, anxiety and increase vitality.

5. Pratyahara: is the withdrawal of the senses from external stimuli and distractions. Pratyahara helps us to cultivate our awareness and focus inward.

6. Dharana is the art of concentration. We focus on a single object or point, like the breath or a mantra. Dharana improves our concentration and helps us cultivate a calm, focused mind.

7. Dhyana: is a form of meditation whereby we go beyond concentration to deep awareness and stillness. Dhyana helps us gain greater insight into ourselves and our world.

8. Samadhi is the state of pure awareness or enlightenment where the individual self merges into the universal consciousness. Samadhi represents the highest level of human consciousness and is the goal of yoga.
